Dear TIG friends,

The tragic situation caused by the earthquake and tsunamis in the Indian Ocean region is leaving millions of people homeless and destitute. While the death toll continues to rise, there is unimaginable work ahead to stave off hunger and disease among those who have survived, many of them children. The World Food Program (WFP) is already hard at work to help save lives in this devastated region.

As search and rescue operations continue and medical assistance is provided, food aid, along with health, shelter, and sanitation concerns, will become more critical for those who have lost their homes and belongings. Funds are urgently needed to help support emergency operations in the region.

You can help!

Please spread the word to your family and friends, and please make a tax-deductible donation today.

Donations can be made at www.friendsofwfp.org or mailed to:

Washington, DC 20008

As the scale of the disaster becomes painfully apparent, WFP has committed an initial $1.5 million to the most urgent food aid needs for hundreds of thousands of tsunami victims in Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Thailand. A much larger regional appeal is about to be launched that will require massive contributions from the private and public sectors, plus individuals like you. WFP is managing and coordinating the food aid response to the affected region, cooperating with fellow UN agencies, relief partners, NGOs, and the national governments concerned.

WFP has started sending its first truckloads of relief food to Sri Lanka, using commodities that were part of an existing WFP stockpile in the country of more than 4,000 tons of rice, wheatflour, lentils and sugar -- enough to provide an emergency ration to 500,000 people for two weeks. The food is heading for the East and Southern coastlines, which have been hardest hit. In other parts of the region, such as Indonesia, food is being loaded on aircraft, ready to dispatch to the neediest people. For more information on WFP
